16 September 2017: Rehearsals today on the roof of Hull Minster as The Royal Ballet returns to the city for the first time in 30 years tonight to reopen Hull New Theatre following the venue’s £16 million transformation.
Curated by the company’s Hull-born director Kevin O’Hare the sold-out show, Opening The New, is a major highlight of this year’s City of Culture events.
Hull born Xander Parish, the first Briton to be a principal dancer at Russia's Mariinsky Ballet and his sister Demelza who is with the Royal Ballet, have returned to their home city for the performance.
They will be joined by others from Hull including Royal Ballet soloist Elizabeth Harrod and Joseph Caley, who has just been made a principal at English National Ballet. The performance will be curated by the Royal Ballet's director Kevin O'Hare, also from Hull.
Another dance in Trinity Square today will involve more than 100 local young dancers.
